Monopoly Streets for the Wii allows 1-4 people to compete for the ultimate prize – Monopoly Champion. But in Monopoly Streets, the way you go about doing that is quite visually different. Monopoly Streets is the first Monopoly game to allow you to play the game from the street level. No longer are you looking down at a Monopoly board. You are now “living” inside a 3D Monopoly city. And that city grows as you play the game.
When you purchase a property, you are purchasing an empty lot (except for Railroads and Utilities). It’s your job to bring life to that empty lot by building houses and hotels. As you do, you get to see the buildings appear and your street become more beautiful.
Monopoly Streets offers many different gameplay options including playing on the classic board and even an additional LandMark City that you can unlock (where “Boardwalk” is now Paris).

Rating
Monopoly Streets is a fun and addictive game whether you are playing alone or with up to three other humans. It’s a new take on Monopoly that puts you in a “street view” of the board. Instead of looking down at the board, your viewpoint is from the street level, so you see all the properties in full 3D as you move past them on the board. When you buy a lot, it is empty. But when you build a house on it, you see the house built in full 3D.
One of the things that makes Monopoly Streets so much fun is the different types of Game styles you can play – thus giving the game a high replay value. Here’s a description of each…
Game Type 1: Official Monopoly
In Official Monopoly, you play the game with all the regular Monopoly rules.
Game Type 2: Speed Die
This is my favorite. First, you get more money at the beginning of the game ($2,500). As the game progresses, at random sometimes a third die is added to your roll. The third die is red and includes numbers, the Monopoly Man, and a Bus. If you hit a number, then it is added to the other numbers (so you can get higher than 12 on a roll). If you get the bus, you get to select one of the “bus stops” for you to land on. If you get the Monopoly Man then it first takes you to the property from the number you rolled on the white die. Then after that it takes you to the first available “For Sale” property. So you can buy two properties in one turn if your initial roll puts you on a For Sale property. Now when all the properties are taken, you don’t want to roll the Monopoly Man. Why? Because it takes you to the first property on the board that you would have to pay rent on! Overall, it speeds up the gameplay.
Game Type 3: Short Game
In short game, each player is randomly given 3 properties to start the game. In addition, you only need three houses (instead of four) before you can build a hotel. Instead of the game ending when there is only one player left standing, it ends after the first bankruptcy is declared. The winner is the person with the highest value (money + properties + improvements).
Game Type 4: Bull Market
In Bull Market, each player starts with $2,500. Then at the beginning of the game every single property is auctioned off. This means you need to manage your money while trying to get Monopolies and keeping other players from getting them. After all the properties have been auctioned, the game begins. But the game only lasts for 20 turns. Whoever has the most highest value at the end of 20 turns wins the game.
Game Type 5: Jackpot!
Jackpot is a fun game as you are allowed to build on properties without needing a Monopoly. So if you land on a property with your first roll and buy it, you can immediately put houses (or even a hotel) on that property. Also, you can trade properties with houses and hotels on them. The first person to double their total worth wins the game.
Game Type 6: Fast Deal
In Fast Deal, you can’t buy properties when you land on them. The property automatically goes to auction. The goal of the game is to get 2 monopolies. The first person to do that wins. In addition, you are given $400 whenever you pass Go and you get $200 when you land on Free Parking. There won’t be time or money to build houses and hotels as you start with only $1,000 and that third red die talked about in Speed Die is in play on every roll.
These six game types is what makes the replay value of playing Monopoly Streets so much fun. And it is what makes the game worth buying.
As you play the game, you earn Monopoly Points. You can save these to purchase new game boards, tokens, or features in the Monopoly Store. The first one you’ll want to purchase is the ability to play as your Mii character. Here’s why.
One of the drawbacks to Monopoly Streets is the very annoying voices of the token players. At first the sounds they make may be “cute” or “funny”, but after awhile they become highly annoying. BUT, when you play as a Mii character (which you have to “unlock” in the Monopoly Store after you have 5,000 Monopoly Points, the Mii characters don’t make those annoying noises.
I had played the game for three days before discovering that you could customize the rules of each game. They don’t make it easy to find these features. When you select the type of game you want to play, press A to customize the rules before starting a game. For those that like money when you land on Free Parking, you can customize it to your hearts content!
Overall, Monopoly Streets is fun and addictive whether you are playing alone or with other players. We give the game 5 out of 5 stars.
